Genie+ And Lightning Lane

Many people associate Disney vacations with long lines. It is true that the four Disney World theme parks are usually crowded year-round, but fortunately, there are ways to significantly cut down on how much time you spend waiting in lines.

This guide will help you understand the benefits and everything to expect from using Genie+ and Lightning Lanes during your Disney World vacation.

What is Genie+?

If you’re familiar with fast passes then you already know a little about what Genie+ offers. The Genie+ service is Disney’s new version of the fast pass system but with a new name and some new rules and procedures on how it works.

Genie+ is a service that you pay for during your Disney vacation. Once purchased, you’ll be able to book reservation times for attractions to use the Lightning Lane entrances.

You can begin booking your Genie+ selections once the park opens.

What is a Lightning Lane?

The Lightning Lane is the name of the shorter lines that you’ll wait in if you use Genie+. Think of Lightning McQueen – he’s supposed to be one of the fastest race cars, so by going into the Lightning Lane for attractions, you’ll get on the ride faster!

You can book your first Lightning Lane once the park opens. You’ll be given an hour-long window that tells you when to head over to that attraction where you’ll wait in a much shorter line.

Typically, you can expect to wait 5-10 minutes in the Lightning Lane queue. Even if the line looks long, they usually move faster than the standby line.

How Often Can You Book Lightning Lanes?

While it would be convenient to book all of your Lightning Lanes right when the park opens, that’s not quite how it works. Once you book a Lightning Lane, you either need to wait 120 minutes to book another one or until you scan into your current Lightning Lane – whichever comes first.

For example, if I book a Lightning Lane for Space Mountain at 10:15 for 10:45, I can book a new one at 10:45 if that’s what time I scan into Space Mountain. If it’s 10:15 and I book a Lightning Lane for 2:00, I’ll have to wait until 12:15 to book a new one.

What is an Individual Lightning Lane?

An Individual Lightning Lane is another add-on for guests. All four major theme parks have at least one attraction you’ll need to pay extra for if you want to spend less time in line. This is typically going to be the newest or most popular attraction in each park. Magic Kingdom is the only theme park that has two Individual Lightning Lanes.

The Individual Lightning Lane is separate from Genie+, so you do not need to pay for Genie+ in order to purchase one.

Prices will vary based on the time of year, but you can expect to pay about $10-25 per person. This can add up quickly and end up costing you $100 if you have 4 people who all want to ride an attraction like Rise of the Resistance or TRON Lightcycle Run. It may not be worth it, but if you have limited time in the theme parks, an Individual Lightning Lane may be the best way to ensure you do some of Disney’s most popular rides.
