The Best Major Sports Events for Your Bucket List

For sports fans, the exhilaration of a best-in-class sporting event can be the experience of a lifetime. The opportunity to see the next Babe Ruth win his first World Series, or see Serena Williams clinch her next Grand Slam makes sports events epic travel destinations.

There are a few elite events in sports where the best of the best from around the world compete. The competition to get a ticket to see these events is almost as stiff as the competition on the field. Here are some of the best bucket list-worthy sporting events to travel to.

The Masters

The U.S. Masters, held in Augusta, Georgia, is one of the four major tournaments in professional golf. Known for its pleasant climate, beautiful grounds, and prestigious traditions, the tournament attracts the best of the best to compete for a coveted championship. The winner walks away with the iconic green jacket and a $15 million prize. The locals in Augusta all clear out for the week and rent out their homes to golf enthusiasts, so pick up a rental for the weekend, grab a folding chair and head to the green to watch golf greats like Tiger Woods and Scottie Scheffler tee off.

The Super Bowl

The Super Bowl is the most watched television broadcast of the year, and you could be a part of the live event. Not only is the NFL championship game a match up of American football titans, it also includes one of the most hyped musical performances every year, the Halftime Show. Pop mega-stars, football MVPs, the Goodyear Blimp, and the coveted Vince Lombardi trophy up for grabs—the Super Bowl has it all. In 2023, Super Bowl LVII will be held in Glendale, Arizona, the perfect backdrop to a history-making event.

Wimbledon

The oldest tennis tournament in the world, Wimbledon is widely regarded as the most prestigious event in the sport. One of the four competitions that make up the Grand Slam, history is made at Wimbledon as athletes pursue a set of wins at all four.

Known for its strict all-white dress code, Wimbledon is one of the biggest events for celebrity sightings as well, as it is often attended by U.K. elites like David and Victoria Beckham and even members of the royal family. Wimbledon is a huge travel destination in its own right, but it has the added bonus of being right next to attractions like the Tower Bridge and Buckingham Palace.

Kentucky Derby

The only sporting event on this list to have its very own cocktail, the Kentucky Derby is known for mint juleps, dapper Southern style, and gambling. The first thing you’ll need to travel to the Kentucky Derby is a wide-brim hat or a seersucker suit, but that’s really all you’ll need. For the rest of your trip, sit back, place some bets and try to pick the next winner of the prestigious Triple Crown. You won’t run out of things to do either, the festivities surrounding the derby last two whole weeks before the event. The Kentucky Derby Festival includes fireworks, a hot air balloon race and tons of Kentucky culture.

The Olympics

Held every two years in alternating seasons, the Olympics is one of the only sporting events that features the best of the best competing in multiple different sports. The Summer Olympics feature fan favorites like gymnastics and track and field, while the Winter Olympics feature equally popular ice skating and hockey. An international competition, each country sends a team to the Olympic Village to compete individually and as a group to contribute to their country’s medal count. The must-see moment of the Olympics is always the Opening Ceremony. The host country shows off their own country’s history and the illustrious history of the Olympic Games, which date back to ancient Roman times. A trip to the Olympics means the opportunity to be a part of the historic Opening Ceremony, follow your favorite athletes, and check out some of the more off-the-wall sports like archery or curling. Being on the forefront of the international stage, the Olympics also often come with international intrigue, like the recent ban against Russian athletes for a state-sponsored doping program. The upcoming Summer Olympics will be held in Paris, France and the upcoming Winter Olympics will be held in Milan and surrounding cities in Italy.

Monaco Grand Prix

The Monaco Grand Prix is the most luxurious of the Formula One Grand Prix events, which is a high bar as the other Grand Prix are held in places like Abu Dhabi, Las Vegas and Miami. It’s easy to feel like James Bond, surrounded by fast cars and fashionable attendees. The race track even goes past the famous Casino de Monte Carlo, which has been featured in multiple James Bond movies.

The ultimate Monaco Grand Prix experience is to watch the race from a yacht. A few stretches of the track pass by harbors and spectators can party on mega-yachts while they watch the Formula One cars go by.

FIFA World Cup

The FIFA World Cup, the league championship for international men’s football, is held every four years and is played over the course of a month at a host country. As a once in a lifetime sports experience, you will have the opportunity to see multiple knockout round games before the final championship. Football (or soccer, as it is called in the U.S.) is known for its rowdy fans, who loudly sing boisterous chants for their favorite teams and players. The upcoming World Cup will be hosted in Qatar, with defending champions France hoping to bring home the title again.
